Globally, university students with disabilities continue to be a significant minority and are part of the most vulnerable, marginalized and excluded groups within the university environment (United Nations, 2021). In Ecuador, as of 2018, only 1.25% of people with disabilities are enrolled in some type of higher education institution. Despite efforts to promote equal rights for people with disabilities, access to higher education represents a challenge, particularly at the level of physical infrastructure. This study analyzes the relationships, tensions, and accommodations between the built space and the experience of students with disabilities in a university environment, in this case the University of Cuenca. Using a mixed- method (quantitative-qualitative) and an interdisciplinary approach (spatial and ethnographic), replicable in universities of different cultural and geographical contexts, physical accessibility and its discrepancies with the functional use of space were evaluated. The results highlight the importance of considering individual experiences and specific disability-related needs when designing accessible environments, advocating a holistic, user-centered approach to ensure the creation of inclusive spaces.
