With the introduction of the computer during the 1980s, it was embraced by designers as a tool that promised to liberate the mind from the old paradigm of the last century. However, these promises had been reduced to its use as an instrument of representation. And therein lies precisely the significance of Peter Eisenman's Biocentre project for the University of Frankfurt, as it became one of the first projects to involve the computer in the design process, beyond its exclusive use as a representation system. Based on these concepts, this paper aims to investigate the relationship between the computer and the DNA theories of Chomsky, Derrida and Mandelbroad, and how these would influence Eisenman's decisions that would lead to the Biocentre project. The short twentieth century was coming to an end, ushering in a new era that would revolutionise ways of seeing and producing architecture.
