Abstract

In La Araucanía, as a result of an urgent occupation since the end of the 19th century, the State established certain architectural typologies that represented its republican presence in a changing territory. This mode of development, neither homogeneous nor general, presents a practice based on the repetitive use of certain architectural types. The objective is to understand in this territory the existence of standardized cases through their historical alternatives; their spatial and projectual similarities, their composition, programmatic distribution, and their urban location. The approach lies in the examination of a standardization process located on a territory of recent occupation. Methodologically, it deals with the review of primary sources, planimetric records and photographs; and secondary sources, such as press reports and in situ analysis that reveal characteristics of the standardization exercise from quantification, modeling and location. As a result, recurrent typological groups are identified in La Araucanía that reveal links with specific governmental policies, conceived under the premises of speed, efficiency and national homogenization.

Author Biographies

Pablo Fuentes Hernández, Universidad del Bío-Bío

Pablo Fuentes Hernández (1962), Full Professor. He graduated in architecture from the School of Architecture of the University of Bío-Bío, Concepción, in 1989. He holds a PhD in Architecture from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (2009). He also holds a Master's degree in Heritage Conservation and Restoration (1999) from the same entity. He is the author of books, book chapters and scientific articles. He has been Principal Investigator of Fondecyt and Anillos projects. He is currently the responsible coordinator of the Ibero-American Historical+Cultural Heritage network, PHI, in its chilean branch.

Bárbara Sáez Orrego, Universidad del Bío-Bío

Architect from the University of Bío-Bío, Concepción CL (2022), Master in Latin American Architecture (2023). PhD student in Architecture and Urbanism, UBB. She currently works as a professor in the Department of Design and Theory at the University of Bío-Bío and the University of San Sebastián, Concepción campus, where she teaches the subjects History of Architecture, Fundamentals of Architecture, and Foundation Workshop I. In the independent practice of her profession, she works as a research assistant for the Fondecyt project 1210592 (2021-present).

Jaime Flores Chávez, Universidad de la Frontera

Jaime Flores Chávez, Associate Professor. He is a State Professor of History, Geography, and Civics from the University of La Frontera in 1987. He earned a Master's degree in History from the University of Santiago de Chile in 1993 and a PhD from the University of Seville in 2005. His research focuses on the History of Chile and the History of Araucanía in the 19th and 20th centuries, teaching undergraduate and graduate levels in these subjects. He is currently involved in several research projects (DIUFRO and FONDECYT) on city and territory in Araucanía; Capuchin missionaries and hygiene in Araucanía; and the generation of images by missionaries and cartographers. As a result of his research, he has written, both individually and jointly, a series of articles, book chapters, and books.
