Abstract

Despite their heritage and architectural recognition, many former industrial complexes worldwide have been unoccupied and in ruins for years. Although abandoned, an informal occupation of these spaces has emerged in some cases, which remains little explored. From the perspective of critical heritage, the objective is to explore the meanings that arise from the informal appropriation of these spaces, contrasting them with those identified by heritage institutions. Thus, the implications of this appropriation in the re-signification of industrial ruins are investigated. The case of the ruins of the National Coal Company in Lota, Chile, was studied; although designated a Historical Monument, it has had no formal use since 1997. Methods included field observation, cartographic and photographic analysis, and interviews with informal users. The findings show that the place allows activities that have no place in the city's public space, and that the new occupants value it mainly through an aesthetic appreciation of the ruin's atmosphere. This study can contribute to sustainable planning of former industrial complexes by integrating activities and uses not yet recognized in the official heritage discourse.
