Abstract

The reviewed work addresses the implications of public space on the health and quality of life of older people with disabilities from the perspective of environmental gerontology. This work carries out a novel multidisciplinary approach to analyze and optimize the relationship between the physical-social characteristics of public spaces and users who age with disabilities. Precisely, in this publication regional development, geography, gerontology and psychology converge, areas of knowledge of the four authors from Mexico and Spain. Among the notable contributions of the work are an exhaustive review of the scientific literature, a novel methodology, based on the combination of different measurement scales for the evaluation of the objective and perceived accessibility of public space, such as verification lists or checklists, and data from a probabilistic survey of older people, which includes measures to document determining aspects of their personal, social and environmental reality, such as health, well-being, functional and cognitive abilities (instrumental activities of daily living), social relationships, and use of public spaces and services (health and social).
