Enviromental and land use Planning decision support system: An application example.

This paper deals with land use/environmental planning problems and describes the application of an innovative planning approach to develop alternative land use solutions. It provides an implementation example of a framework that can be applied to a variety of complex environmental and land use planning problems. The paper first briefly introduces an analysis process and a related Spatial Decision Support System (SDSS), which utilizes GIS and
optimization models, both of which were developed in previous works.
Then it attempts to demonstrate how the process and the SDSS can be used in real world situations to help in analysis and planning of spatial distribution of activities. This is accomplished by applying the innovative land-use planning approach to an area located in the fringe of a thriving metropolitan area, which encompasses a newly developed lake and major thoroughfares.
